´It was narrated that Abu Zaid Al-Ansari said:` “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) passed by one of the houses of the Ansar and noticed the smell of a cooking pot. He said: ‘Who is this who has slaughtered?’ A man from among us came out and said: ‘It is me, O Messenger of Allah, I slaughtered before the prayer so that I could feed my family and neighbors.’ He commanded him to repeat it. He said: ‘No, by the One besides Whom there is none worthy of worship, I do not have anything but a one-year-old sheep or a lamb.’ He (ﷺ) said: ‘Sacrifice it, but a one-year-old sheep will not do for anyone after you.’”

Benefits and Issues:
➊ The mentioned narration has been declared absolutely sahih by Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah, and Shaykh Zubair radi Allahu anhu has also termed its chain absolutely hasan. However, the correct view appears to be that the words (aw hamal min al-dhan) in this narration are not authentic, because in Sahih al-Bukhari and other sources, instead of this phrase, the words (min al-ma‘z) are found. In addition, the researchers of Musnad Ahmad have also indicated this. For details, see (al-Mawsu‘ah al-Hadithiyyah, Musnad al-Imam Ahmad: 34/334) .
Therefore, the jadha‘ (one-year-old ram, chhatra) of a sheep is absolutely permissible, as is established in the hadith:
(Indeed, the jadha‘ suffices for what a thaniyyah suffices for) (Sunan Ibn Majah, al-Adahi, Chapter: What is sufficient for sacrifice, Hadith: 3140) .
A jadha‘ animal suffices in place of a two-toothed (thaniyyah) animal. However, it is preferable to sacrifice a two-toothed animal, as has been detailed in the benefits of Hadith number: 3140.
Also, the jadha‘ (one-year-old ram, chhatra) is only permissible from the sheep category; the jadha‘ (one-year-old) of a goat is not permissible.
And Allah knows best.
