´It was narrated that Jabir bin ‘Abdullah said:` “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sacrificed two rams on the Day of ‘Eid. When he turned them to face towards the prayer direction he said: ‘Verily, I have turned my face towards Him Who has created the heavens and the earth, as a monotheist, and I am not of the polytheists. Verily, my prayer, my sacrifice, my living, and my dying are for Allah, the Lord of all that exists. He has no partner. And of this I have been commanded, and I am the first of the Muslims. [6:79,162-163] O Allah, from You to You, on behalf of Muhammad and his nation.’”
Hadith Referenceسنن ابن ماجه / كِتَابُ الْأَضَاحِي / 3121
1؎: The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam sacrificed two rams; otherwise, one ram or one goat is sufficient on behalf of all the household members, as will be mentioned ahead. The reason for this was that he sacrificed one ram on behalf of his household, and the second on behalf of his ummah. Now, for other people who perform the sacrifice, it is sufficient for them to slaughter only one ram, and the more excellent and fattened it is, the more virtuous and better it is.
´Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah:` "I attended the Eid Al-Adha' with the Prophet (ﷺ) at the Musalla. When he finished his Khutbah, he descended from his Minbar and was given a male sheep. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) slaughtered it with his hand and said: 'Bismillah, Wa Allahu Akbar, this from me and whoever does not slaughter from my Ummah.'"

Explanation: 1: I begin with the name of Allah, and Allah is the Greatest. This is on my behalf and on behalf of those members of my ummah who have not performed the sacrifice. (This last sentence is clear and explicit regarding the fact that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam performed the sacrifice on behalf of those members of his ummah who were alive and, due to necessity, were unable to perform the sacrifice themselves. Including the deceased in this is forced and unwarranted.)
Note: (There is a difference of opinion regarding the hearing (sama‘) of this narration from Jabir radi Allahu anhu by “Muttalib,” but based on supporting evidences and corroborating narrations, this hadith is considered sahih li ghayrihi (authentic due to supporting chains), al-Irwa’ 1138, and refer to al-Albani 580.)
