Hadith 3029

´It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbas said:` “On the morning of ‘Aqabah, when he was atop his she-camel, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Pick up some pebbles for me.’ So I picked up seven pebbles for him, suitable for Khadhf.* He began to toss them in his hand, saying: ‘Throw something like these.’ Then he said: ‘O people, beware of exaggeration in religious matters for those who came before you were doomed because of exaggeration in religious matters.’”

Brief Explanation
1؎: Ghuluww: To excessively exaggerate something or to be overly strict in it is called ghuluww. For example, the command is to throw pebbles (during the ritual of stoning), and small pebbles suffice. Now, ghuluww would be to throw large stones or rocks and to consider this a more virtuous act. In every matter of religion, engaging in ghuluww is prohibited, and it is a sign of foolishness. It is also ghuluww, for instance, that if someone abandons a recommended (mustahabb) or Sunnah act, one reproaches or abuses him. If someone abandons a Sunnah, it is sufficient to gently relate to him the hadith. If people abandon an obligatory act (fard), then one should command it with firmness. However, in this era, the situation has become such that no one reproaches those who abandon obligations; people maintain friendships with those who neglect prayer, drink alcohol, and consume usury, but if someone does not kiss his thumbs during the adhan or does not stand during the mawlid, they become his enemies. This too is an extreme form of ghuluww, and it is because of such matters that Muslims have been ruined, and just as the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had said, so it has come to pass.
Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues:

Pebbles for stoning (rami) can be taken from any place, even if they are taken from Mina itself.
Only those pebbles are prohibited which have already been thrown at the Jamarat.

It is commonly believed among the public that pebbles for rami must be collected from Muzdalifah; this is not correct.
The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had taken seven pebbles from Mina itself.
He did not collect the pebbles for all four days at once.

Washing the selected pebbles for rami is a baseless issue.
It has no significance.

In any matter of religion, exceeding the limit set by the Sunnah is an act that pleases Shaytan.
Throwing small pebbles according to the Sunnah causes Shaytan distress,
because by this the believer attains reward.
