´It was narratd that an Umm Walad* of Shaibah said:` “I saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) performing Sa’y between Safa and Marwah saying: ‘The valley should not be crossed except quickly.’”

Brief Explanation
1؎: Umm Walad: A slave woman who has borne a child for her master. Abtah: A place between Safa and Marwah; now, two green markers have been placed there. One should run (sa’y) between them—this is the Sunnah of Hajarah (alayha as-salam), who ran here seven times in search of water.
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:
(1)
Abtah (the land covered with pebbles) refers to the valley between Safa and Marwah.

(2)
The place for sa'i (ritual walking) is between the two mountains of Safa and Marwah. It is not Sunnah to run while ascending or descending the mountains.

(3)
Nowadays, the place for sa'i has been leveled and a paved path has been constructed. In the blessed era of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), the extent of the leveled area was marked with green signs. These signs are called the two green markers (mileyn akhdarayn). One should run between them. The remaining distance should be covered at a normal pace.

(4)
In the current building, sa'i can also be performed on the upper floor. There too, the area for running has been designated with green color.
