بَابُ : فَضْلِ دُعَاءِ الْحَجِّChapter: The virtue of the pilgrim’s supplication

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ أَبِي سُلَيْمَانَ ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ ، عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ صَفْوَانَ ، قَالَ : وَكَانَتْ تَحْتَهُ ابْنَةُ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ ، فَأَتَاهَا فَوَجَدَ أُمَّ الدَّرْدَاءِ ، وَلَمْ يَجِدْ أَبَا الدَّرْدَاءِ ، فَقَالَتْ لَهُ : تُرِيدُ الْحَجَّ الْعَامَ ؟ ، قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، قَالَتْ : فَادْعُ اللَّهَ لَنَا بِخَيْرٍ ، فَإِنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَقُولُ : " دَعْوَةُ الْمَرْءِ مُسْتَجَابَةٌ لِأَخِيهِ بِظَهْرِ الْغَيْبِ ، عِنْدَ رَأْسِهِ مَلَكٌ يُؤَمِّنُ عَلَى دُعَائِهِ كُلَّمَا دَعَا لَهُ بِخَيْرٍ ، قَالَ : آمِينَ ، وَلَكَ بِمِثْلِهِ " ، قَالَ : ثُمَّ خَرَجْتُ إِلَى السُّوقِ ، فَلَقِيتُ أَبَا الدَّرْدَاءِ فَحَدَّثَنِي عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِمِثْلِ ذَلِكَ .
´It was narrated from Safwan bin ‘Abdullah bin Safwan said that he was married to a daughter of Abu Darda’. He came to her and found Umm Darda’ there, but he did not find Abu Darda’. She said to him:` “Do you intend to perform Hajj this year?” He said: “Yes.” She said: “Pray to Allah for us to grant us goodness, for the Prophet (ﷺ) used to say: ‘The supplication of a man for his brother in his absence will be answered. By his head there is an angel who says Amin to his supplication, and every time he prays for his brother, he says: “Amin, and the same for you.’” He said: “Then I went out to the marketplace where I met Abu Darda’, and he told me something similar from the Prophet (ﷺ).”

➊ One should request supplication (dua) from those who are going for Hajj and Umrah.
➋ One should make arrangements to supplicate at the most virtuous places.
➌ Praying for someone in their absence is a deed of great reward and a means of Allah’s mercy and blessing.
➍ The supplication of the angels is an indication of acceptance, because the angels only supplicate by Allah’s command.
➎ A person of higher status can request supplication from someone of a lower rank.
➏ It is permissible to supplicate for someone of higher status than oneself.
➐ In those times and places where there is greater hope for the acceptance of supplication, one should pray for one’s elders, friends, and loved ones, even if they have not requested supplication.

1534. English Commentary:
➊ Abu Darda’ radi Allahu anhu had two wives, and both had the kunyah (agnomen) Umm Darda’. The elder was a Sahabiyyah (female Companion) radi Allahu anha; her name was Khayrah. The one mentioned in this chain of narration is a Tabi‘iyyah (Successor); her name is recorded as Hijmiyyah, or Jahimah, or Jumanah. Rahimaha Allahu ta‘ala.
➋ In this, there is encouragement that a person should include all his close and distant relatives, and even the general body of Muslims, in his supplications, so that the angels may pray for him. And the supplication of the angels (insha Allah) will be more helpful for acceptance.
