Hadith 2862

´It was narrated from Abu Dharr that he reached Rabadhah when the Iqamah for the prayer had already been given, and there was a slave leading them in prayer. It was said:` “This is Abu Dharr,” so he (the slave) started to move back. But Abu Dharr said: “My close friend (i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ)) told me to listen and obey, even if (the leader was) an Ethiopian slave with amputated limbs.”

Brief Explanation
1؎ : It is understood from the hadith that it is necessary to always be mindful of unity with the congregation of Muslims, and if there is a fear that unity may be lost due to some recommended (mustahabb) or Sunnah act, then as long as this fear remains, one may refrain from that recommended or Sunnah act. However, as much as possible, one should wisely explain to people that this action is recommended (mustahabb) and a Sunnah of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and to cause discord and strife over it is clearly contrary to faith.

Benefits and Issues:

➊ Obedience to the Muslim ruler is obligatory.

➋ In an Islamic government, positions are given on the basis of merit and capability, not on the basis of race, lineage, or outward beauty.

➌ It is the duty of rulers to conduct the administration of the Islamic state according to the commands of the Shari‘ah; otherwise, if a command is contrary to the Shari‘ah, it can be refused, and this will not be considered rebellion.

➍ The scholar (‘alim) should be respected.

➎ Respect for the scholar also includes that, in his presence, a scholar of lesser rank should not lead the prayer.

➏ With the permission of the scholar, a person of lesser rank may also lead the prayer.

➐ The ruler, by virtue of his office, has the right to lead the prayer as imam.

➑ It is very important to maintain collective discipline among Muslims.

Hadith Commentary:
Benefits and Issues:
From this hadith, it is understood that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), after conveying and recording the Qur’anic verses, would sometimes forget a verse. However, this forgetfulness was temporary; sometimes the verse would come back to his mind on its own, and at other times, he would recall it after hearing it from someone else. That is why the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
(I forget just as you forget)
From a human perspective, I too forget just like you do.
