Brief Explanation
1؎ : In the hadith, the words «رایہ» and «لواء» are mentioned. «رایہ» means the large banner was black, and «لواء» means the small banner was white. From this, it is understood that it is recommended (mustahabb) for the imam to organize the armies and to make banners and signs.

Benefits and Issues:

➊ By “black” is not meant pure black; rather, this flag was made of striped cloth and was square-shaped. (Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi, al-Jihad, Chapter: What Has Been Related About Banners, Hadith: 1680)

➋ In war, the flags of different battalions can be of different colors.

➌ Both (rayah) and (liwa’) mean “flag.” In this respect, they are synonymous words; however, according to one opinion, (rayah) is a large flag and (liwa’) is a small flag (Hashiyah Sunan Ibn Majah by Muhammad Fu’ad ‘Abd al-Baqi). We have translated according to the other opinion.
