´Sulaiman bin Habib said:` “We entered upon Abu Umamah and he saw some silver ornaments on our swords. He got angry and said: ‘People conquered lands and their swords were not adorned with gold and silver, but with lead and iron and ‘Alabi.’”
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:
➊ The use of weapons in war or the use of items for protection against the enemy’s weapons is not contrary to reliance upon Allah (tawakkul).
➋ Makkah Mukarramah is a sanctuary (haram) where fighting and combat are prohibited. Allah Ta’ala granted the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) special permission for jihad on the day of the conquest of Makkah. When Makkah was conquered, the prohibition was reinstated.
➌ The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used the weapons and defensive items common in his time, such as a helmet and coat of mail (zirah). We should use modern items, and in fact, we should invent or manufacture them ourselves. Therefore, acquiring, preparing, and using the most modern equipment—such as tanks, submarines, armored vehicles, and military attire like helmets, night-vision goggles, etc.—is a requirement of the Shari‘ah.
