´It was narrated from ‘Abdullah concerning the Verse:` “Think not of those as dead who are killed in the way of Allah. Nay, they are alive, with their Lord, and they have provision,”[3:169] that he said: “We asked about that, and (the Prophet (ﷺ)) said: ‘Their souls are like green birds that fly wherever they wish in Paradise, then they come back to lamps suspended from the Throne. While they were like that, your Lord looked at them and said, “Ask me for whatever you want.” They said: “O Lord, what should we ask You for when we can fly wherever we wish in Paradise?” When they saw that they would not be left alone until they had asked for something, they said: “We ask You to return our souls to our bodies in the world so that we may fight for Your sake (again).” When He saw that they would not ask for anything but that, they were left alone.’”

1؎: That is, those who are killed in the path of Allah should not be considered dead; rather, they are alive with their Lord, and they are provided sustenance. From this verse, the life of the martyrs (shuhada) and their provision is established. And from other verses and hadiths, it is established that in reality, death is the name for the soul (ruh) departing from the body, not the annihilation of the soul itself. Thus, when the soul remains and is not annihilated, then life also remains. However, it cannot be said that it is a life like that of this world; rather, perhaps it is even stronger and more powerful than worldly life. If someone objects that if all people are alive, then what is the distinction of the martyrs, whereas this verse indicates their distinction, then the answer is that the distinction and excellence of the martyrs is that they are not only alive, but also honored and revered in the presence of Allah, and they are given the fruits of Paradise to eat every day. All these things will not be for others. However, in another hadith, it is mentioned that the souls of the believers (mu’minun) move about in Paradise in the form of birds; in this, all believers are included. And in one hadith, it is mentioned that a path towards Paradise will be opened for the believer in the grave; from this, it is understood that until the Day of Judgment, the soul of the believer will remain there. In short, regarding the abode of the soul, there are many opinions among the scholars, which Imam Ibn al-Qayyim rahimahullah has mentioned in detail in «حادی الأرواح إلی بلاد الأفراح», and the most preferred opinion is that the souls of the believers are in Paradise, and those of the disbelievers are in Hell. And Allah knows best.
