´'Abdullah bin Muhammed bin 'Aqil bin Abu Talib narrated from his father that his grandfather said:` "The Messenger of Allah said: 'A Mudd is sufficient for the ablution and a Sa' is sufficient for the bath.' A man said: 'It is not sufficient for us.'" He (the narrator) said: "It was sufficient for one who is better than you and had more hair" meaning the Prophet.

Brief Explanation
1؎: Aqil ibn Abi Talib radi Allahu anhu has, in effect, indicated that the insufficiency of one mudd or one sa’ of water can only be due to two reasons: either out of caution and piety, or due to the abundance of hair. Now, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was more pious and cautious than you, and his hair was also more than yours. When such an amount of water was sufficient for him, why should it not be sufficient for you—except that you are of a doubtful nature or afflicted by obsessive thoughts (waswasah)? There is no other reason.
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
The meaning of this statement by Aqil (radi Allahu anhu) is that if the purpose of using more water is purification and cleanliness, then the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was fond of cleanliness. If caution is intended, then the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was even more God-fearing. If the thought is that there is more hair, then the hair of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was not less than yours either. Therefore, the questioner's use of excessive water may be merely due to doubt and misgivings, or due to extravagance, and it is necessary to avoid this.
