بَابُ : لاَ يُقْتَلُ مُسْلِمٌ بِكَافِرٍChapter: A Muslim Should Not Killed For A Disbeliever

حَدَّثَنَا عَلْقَمَةُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الدَّارِمِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ ، عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي جُحَيْفَةَ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ لِعَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ هَلْ عِنْدَكُمْ شَيْءٌ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ لَيْسَ عِنْدَ النَّاسِ ؟ قَالَ : " لَا ، وَاللَّهِ مَا عِنْدَنَا إِلَّا مَا عِنْدَ النَّاسِ ، إِلَّا أَنْ يَرْزُقَ اللَّهُ رَجُلًا فَهْمًا فِي الْقُرْآنِ ، أَوْ مَا فِي هَذِهِ الصَّحِيفَةِ فِيهَا الدِّيَاتُ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَأَنْ لَا يُقْتَلَ مُسْلِمٌ بِكَافِرٍ " .
´It was narrated that Abu Juhaifah said:` “I said to 'Ali bin Abu Talib: 'Do you have any knowledge that the people do not have?' He said: 'No, by Allah, we only know what the people know, except that Allah may bless a man with understanding of Qur'an or what is in this sheet, in which are mentioned the rulings on blood money from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and it says that a Muslim should not be killed in retaliation for the murder of disbeliever.'”
Brief Explanation
1؎: In the narration of Imam Bukhari, Abu Juhaifah radi Allahu anhu said: “Do you have any revelation that is not in the Noble Qur’an?” That is, in the present Qur’an which is with everyone. This refutes the Shia who say that the Qur’an is not complete, that some surahs are missing from it, and that the complete Qur’an was with Ali al-Murtada radi Allahu anhu after the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and then it was passed on to each Imam until it reached Imam Mahdi, who is now in occultation, and when he appears, the complete Qur’an will be spread in the world. Ma’adh Allah (Allah forbid), all these are lies and superstitions. In the hadith, Ali radi Allahu anhu swore an oath and made it clear that the knowledge we have is the same as what other people have.

Benefits and Issues:

During the time of Ali radi Allahu anhu, some people spread false statements about him.
Ali radi Allahu anhu refuted these false beliefs to the utmost extent possible.

It is commonly claimed about Ali radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam granted him “inner knowledge” (‘ilm al-batin), which is different from the apparent knowledge of the Shari‘ah.
The current Sufi orders are also based on this concept.
This is an incorrect belief.
Whatever the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam has stated regarding the purification of the soul (tazkiyat al-nafs) is all present in the books of hadith.
This is not some secret knowledge.

“Ilm al-jafr” is also attributed to Ali radi Allahu anhu,
through which, in people’s imagination, they come to know hidden matters of the past and future.
All of this is baseless.
To accept anyone other than Allah as a knower of the unseen (‘alim al-ghayb) is a denial of many verses of the Qur’an.

To reflect and ponder upon the Noble Qur’an and to discover scholarly points is a great blessing.
To acquire this knowledge and to adorn one’s practical life in accordance with it is the real objective.

The noble Companions radi Allahu anhum used to write down and preserve the Prophetic hadith, because they considered it an essential part of the Shari‘ah.
And they acted upon it.

If a Muslim kills a dhimmi (non-Muslim under Muslim protection), then he will not be killed in retribution (qisas); however, blood money (diyah) can be taken.
