´It was narrated that 'Abdur-Rahman bin Abi Laila said:` We said to Zaid bin Arqam: 'Tell us a Hadith from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).' He said: 'We have grown old and have forgotten, and (narrating) Ahadith from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) is difficult (not a simple matter).'"

Commentary:
(1)
From this, it is understood that the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) considered the Prophetic hadith to be something very important and great. Therefore, they would narrate only that which they remembered well.
(2)
From this, the hadith scholars (muhaddithin) have derived the principle that when a scholar, due to old age, begins to make mistakes in narrating hadith, it is appropriate for him to refrain from narrating hadith.
(3)
The scholars should only mention those hadith in their speeches and sermons about which they know with certainty that they are authentic (sahih) or good (hasan), and they should avoid weak (da'if) narrations.
