1؎: That is, on every side of the well, an area of forty cubits will be considered its domain, because customarily this much space suffices for animals. And some have said that this applies when the depth of the well is forty cubits; if it is more than that, then an area equal to its depth on every side will be allotted.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ When camels are given water to drink, after drinking once, they sit near the well, and after some time, they drink water again. For this purpose, a place is designated near the well.
➋ Whoever digs a well in a place that is not owned by anyone, then that well and the forty hand-spans of land around it become his property.
