´It was narrarted that Jabir bin 'Abdullah said:` "When the Prophet walked, his Companions would walk in front of him, and he would leave his back for the angels."

Hadith Gradingالألبانی:صحيح | زبیر علی زئی:ضعيف, إسناده ضعيف, سفيان الثوري عنعن, و روي الحاكم (4/ 281 ح 7753) عن جابر بن عبد اللّٰه رضي اللّٰه عنه قال قال رسول اللّٰه ﷺ: ((لا تمشوا بين يدي ولا خلفي فإن ھذا مقام الملائكة)) قال جابر: ’’ جئت أسعي إلي النبي ﷺ كأني شرارة ‘‘ وسنده صحيح, انوار الصحيفه، صفحه نمبر 384
Commentary: (1) From this it is understood that when some people walk ahead of a venerable person and some walk behind, this is permissible; it is only prohibited when all the people walk behind.
(2) Walking ahead of a venerable person is not contrary to proper etiquette.
