بَابُ : مَنْ كَرِهَ أَنْ يُوطَأَ عَقِبَاهُChapter: He who dislikes having people walk behind him
Hadith 246

حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ ، عَنْ نُبَيْحٍ الْعَنَزِيِّ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : " كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم إِذَا مَشَى مَشَى أَصْحَابُهُ أَمَامَهُ وَتَرَكُوا ظَهْرَهُ لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ " .
´It was narrarted that Jabir bin 'Abdullah said:` "When the Prophet walked, his Companions would walk in front of him, and he would leave his back for the angels."

Commentary:

From this it is understood that when some people walk ahead of a venerable person and some walk behind, this is permissible; it is only prohibited when all the people walk behind.

Walking ahead of a venerable person is not contrary to proper etiquette.
