➊
A human being’s life is extremely brief and limited.
A person should strive to perform such deeds within this short span that will benefit him after death.
Among these, those actions hold special importance whose reward continues to accrue.
Because of such deeds, one can earn much in a short time, which is why they are considered the best legacy.
➋
A person continues to receive the reward of those deeds after death from which others continue to benefit.
In this hadith, three such things are mentioned as examples.
➌
Children are a great blessing from Allah, whether sons or daughters.
The best way to show gratitude for this blessing is to ensure their good education and upbringing so that they become good Muslims and useful members of society.
Righteous children are a comfort to the eyes and a support in worldly matters during one’s lifetime, and after the parents’ death, they become a means for the elevation of their ranks.
When children sincerely pray for their parents, the sins of the deceased parents are forgiven and their ranks are raised.
➍
There is no specific time or particular method for supplicating for deceased elders.
Qul, daswan (tenth day), chaliswan (fortieth day), barsi (annual commemoration), etc., are merely customs that Muslims have adopted in imitation of Hindus; there is no evidence for them in the Shariah, so one cannot hope for reward through them.
Besides this, the customary methods of conveying reward (isal-e-thawab) are also not established from the Qur’an and Sunnah.
➎
Sadaqah Jariyah (ongoing charity) refers to such things whose benefit continues for a long time, for example:
Arranging water where people face difficulty in obtaining it, teaching a skill to an unemployed person so that he may earn a lawful livelihood, etc.
➏
Teaching someone knowledge or performing any beneficial scholarly work is also an act whose reward continues.
The writings of the noble hadith scholars (muhaddithin rahimahumullah) and other scholarly compilations are also included in this, as long as people continue to benefit from them.
The authors will continue to receive reward.
