Hadith 239

حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصُ بْنُ عُمَرَ ، عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَطَاءٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : " إِنَّهُ لَيَسْتَغْفِرُ لِلْعَالِمِ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَنْ فِي الْأَرْضِ ، حَتَّى الْحِيتَانِ فِي الْبَحْرِ " .
´It was narrated that Abu Dharr said:` "I heard the Messenger of Allah say: 'Everyone in the universe, in the heavens and on earth, prays for forgiveness for the scholar, even the fish in the sea."

Commentary:
➊ Some researchers have declared this narration to be authentic; see: Al-Ta‘leeq Al-Ragheeb: 1/59, 60.
➋ By “the creatures of the heavens” is meant the angels, and among the creatures of the earth are included all animals, inanimate objects, insects, birds, and sea creatures, etc. And all creatures benefit from the blessings of a righteous person.
➌ Consciousness is also found in animals and inanimate objects, even if we are not aware of it; therefore, they worship Allah in their own ways, and they possess love and fear of Allah as well. For this reason, they love Allah’s righteous servants and harbor aversion towards the disobedient sinners.
➍ This hadith demonstrates the honor of the teacher and the preacher, and their elevated status with Allah. This applies whether the teaching and preaching is done through speech, writing, or in the form of instruction, provided that they themselves also act according to their knowledge.
