´Amr bin Maimun said :` "I used to visit Ibn Mas'ud every Thursday afternoon but he never uttered the words: 'The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said.' Then one evening, he said: 'The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said,' then he let his head hang down." He said: "I looked at him and saw his shirt was unfastened; his eyes were filled with tears, and his veins were bulging out (with fear). He said:' Or more than that, or less than that, or close to that or something similar.'"

Commentary:
➊
Amr ibn Maymun rahimahullah used to present himself in the service of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu every Thursday, because Ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu used to hold a weekly scholarly gathering.
It is narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari that when he was requested more than once to establish gatherings of knowledge and admonition, he replied:
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would also give advice according to the appropriate occasion and time, so that the listeners would not become weary. (, Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Knowledge, Chapter: Appointing specific days for the people of knowledge, Hadith: 70)
Therefore, it is appropriate to fix a time for teaching knowledge or giving admonition, so that people can benefit with ease.
➋
In the hadith, the word (عَشِيَّةً) is used.
We have translated it as "when the day declined."
In the Arabic language, the word (عَشِيَّةً) is used for the time from the sun's decline until sunset.
It is possible that the time of this gathering was fixed after the Zuhr (noon) prayer or after the Asr (afternoon) prayer.
And Allah knows best.
➌
Abdullah ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu would avoid narrating hadith word-for-word so that no word would be attributed to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam which he had not actually said.
However, many of the noble Companions would narrate hadith verbatim.
Both methods of narrating hadith are correct.
Narrating verbatim is superior, and narrating by meaning requires greater caution.
➍
Among the etiquettes of narrating hadith is that if the exact words of the hadith are not fully remembered, then after narrating the hadith, one should say:
(اَوْ كَمَا قَالَ)
"Or as he said," or "as the words he said," as will be mentioned in the next narration regarding the practice of Anas ibn Malik radi Allahu anhu.
