Hadith 2257

´It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said:` "I heard Abu Saeed Al-Khudri say: 'A Dirham for a Dirham and a Dinar for a Dinar.' So I said: 'I heard Ibn 'Abbas say something other than that.' He said: 'But I met Ibn 'Abbas and said: "Tell me about what you say concerning exchange is it something that you heard from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) or something that You found in the Book of Allah?" He said: "I did not find it in the Book of Allah, and I did not hear it from the Messenger of Allah; rather Usamah bin Zaid told me that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Usury is only in credit."[1]

Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:
➊ The exchange of gold for silver or silver for gold should be hand to hand (immediate).

➋ The exchange of currencies from different countries should also be done hand to hand according to the prevailing rate. If someone says, “I have US dollars and I want to take Saudi riyals in exchange for them,” and the other person says, “Give me the dollars, I will give you this many riyals tomorrow in exchange,” this is not permissible.

➌ The noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) considered hadith to be a proof, and even if a hadith did not reach them directly from the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) but came through another person, they still considered acting upon it necessary.

➍ Interest (riba) only occurs in deferred transactions; this is in the case when the items being exchanged belong to different categories, for example: gold and silver, or wheat and dates. Their mutual exchange with an increase or decrease is permissible. Exchanging ten or fifteen grams of silver for one gram of gold, or exchanging two mann of barley for one mann of wheat is permissible, provided that payment is made in cash from both sides. The exchange of the same item with an increase or decrease, even if paid immediately, is not permissible. For example, exchanging two mann of inferior quality wheat for one mann of good quality wheat is not allowed, even if the wheat is delivered immediately from both sides.

Benefit:
In this hadith, one type of usury (riba) is mentioned, and that is usury in deferred payment. One form of this is when there is a difference between the cash price and the deferred price; this is clear usury. In the present era, new names for usury are emerging, but in reality, they are still usury; only their names have been changed. This is a curse. May Allah, the Exalted, protect the Muslims from it. Ameen.

Benefit:
It is established from this hadith that when there is an exchange of the same kind (of commodity), then it must be equal in weight and hand-to-hand (immediate exchange). However, the position of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma was contrary to this. He used to say that a dinar can be sold for two dinars in a hand-to-hand transaction. According to him, usury (riba) only occurs when there is a delay from one side (i.e., when it is not immediate).
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri radi Allahu anhu explained to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma, so Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma retracted his position. After retracting, Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma also strictly prohibited it.
In case of disagreement, respect must be maintained, and decisions should be made based on evidence, not on age or majority.
