Hadith 2223

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ بِشْرِ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَقِيلِ بْنِ خُوَيْلِدٍ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ وَاقِدٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ، حَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ النَّحْوِيُّ ، أَنَّ عِكْرِمَةَ حَدَّثَهُ ، عَنْ ابنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ : " لَمَّا قَدِمَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمَدِينَةَ كَانُوا مِنْ أَخْبَثِ النَّاسِ كَيْلًا ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ سُبْحَانَهُ وَيْلٌ لِلْمُطَفِّفِينَ فَأَحْسَنُوا الْكَيْلَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ " .
´It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said:` "When the Prophet (ﷺ) came to Al-Madinah, they were the worst people in weights and measures. Then Allah, Glorious is He revealed: "Woe to the Mutaffifun (those who give less in measure and weight)",[1] and they were fair in weights and measures after that.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ The meaning of "kayl" is to determine the quantity of something using a container or similar means. The Arabs used to buy and sell grain and similar items by measure rather than by weight. This practice still remains in our villages. Liquids (such as oil, petrol, etc.) are sold by measure everywhere.
➋ The meaning of the people of Madinah measuring carelessly is that they were very negligent while measuring, which would cause loss to the one receiving the measured goods.
➌ To deliberately give short measure or short weight is a major sin, but even causing someone loss due to lack of care is a bad thing.
➍ The noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma'in) never showed negligence in acting upon the commands of the Qur'an and the instructions of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam); rather, they would act immediately. This should also be the attitude of Muslims.
