Hadith 2141

´It was narrated from Mu'adh bin 'Abdullah bin Khubaib, from his father, that his paternal uncle said:` "We were sitting in a gathering, and the Prophet (ﷺ) came with traces of water on his head. One of us said to him: 'We see that you are of good cheer today.' He said: 'Yes, praise is to Allah.' Then he spoke to the people about being rich. He said: 'There is nothing wrong with being rich for one who has piety, but good health for one who has piety is better than riches, and being of good cheer is a blessing."

Benefits and Issues:

➊ Wealth in itself is not an evil thing; rather, the way it is acquired and whether it is spent in lawful or unlawful places is what makes it blameworthy.

➋ A God-fearing, righteous person earns his livelihood through lawful (halal) means and spends it on good deeds and fulfilling legitimate needs. In this way, he is rewarded both for earning and for spending. For such a person, wealth is truly a great blessing.

➌ A sinful person does not distinguish between lawful and unlawful (halal and haram) in earning his livelihood, and when spending, he does so out of pride, ostentation, or on unnecessary luxury and extravagance. Thus, for him, acquiring this wealth becomes a means of sin, and spending it also increases him in sin. For such a person, wealth becomes a trial and even a cause of destruction. May Allah protect us. Ameen.

➍ Health is a greater blessing than wealth. Even with less wealth, many good deeds can be performed in a state of good health.

➎ To be happy with Allah’s blessings and to express gratitude for them is not contrary to piety (taqwa) and asceticism (zuhd).

➏ A believer should remain cheerful and happy. Meeting a Muslim brother with a smiling face is not a minor good deed. See: (Sahih Muslim, al-Birr wa al-Silah, Chapter: The Recommendation of Cheerfulness When Meeting, Hadith: 2626)

➐ Instead of grieving over the blessings we do not have, we should focus on the blessings we do possess, so that a sense of gratitude is developed in the heart and we are protected from the evil of ingratitude. Allah the Exalted has said:

“And as for the favor of your Lord, proclaim it.” (al-Duha, 93:11)
