´Kathir bin 'Abdullah narrated from his father, that his grandfather said:` "I heard the Messenger of Allah say: 'Whoever revives a Sunnah of mine that dies out after I am gone, he will have a reward equivalent to that of those among the people who act upon it, without that detracting from their reward in the slightest. Whoever introduces an innovation (Bid'ah) with which Allah and his Messenger are not pleased, he will have a (burden of) sin equivalent to that of those among the people who act upon it, without that detracting from their sins in the slightest.'"

Commentary:
This hadith is weak; however, as far as the reward for reviving a dead Sunnah and likewise the severe sin for inventing a bid‘ah (innovation) is concerned, that is established from other ahadith as well.

Commentary:
(1)
By "dead Sunnah" is meant that established legal (shar‘i) practice which people have abandoned due to ignorance or laziness, whether it is obligatory (fard or wajib) or recommended (mustahabb or mandub).
And to "revive" it means to make it prevalent in society once again.
For this purpose, it is evident that the one who calls to it must himself adhere to it strictly and must also preach it to others.
Then, when people express astonishment at it and try to prevent it, steadfastness must be demonstrated; this is why the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has especially drawn attention to this.
(2)
In this narration, there is a severe warning for those who invite people towards innovations (bid‘ah) and try to establish them among the Muslims.
The people of knowledge should strongly oppose such individuals, because innovation is contrary to the Sunnah. As innovations become prevalent, people’s attention is diverted from the Sunnah, and as a result, a time comes when the Sunnah becomes "dead." Thus, to revive it, fresh effort is required. Therefore, in order to maintain the Sunnahs, there is a strong need to refute innovations.

Some of the imams have authenticated this narration on the basis of supporting evidences.

Hadith Authentication
The chain of narration (isnad) of this narration is extremely weak.
A fundamental narrator in this chain is Kathir ibn Abdullah ibn Amr ibn Awf al-Muzani, about whom Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal said:
“He is worth nothing.” al-kh [كتاب العلل و معرفيه الرجال 3213ت 4922 ملخصا]
◄ Imam Yahya ibn Ma'in said:
«ليس بشئي» “He is nothing.” [تاريخ عثمان بن سعيد الدارمي : 713]
In addition to them, the majority of hadith scholars have criticized Kathir mentioned above.
◄ Hafiz Haythami says:
«وهو ضعيف عند الجمهور» “And he is weak according to the majority.” [مجمع الزوائد68/6]
Also see Majma‘ al-Zawa’id [130/6، 286] and [فتح الباري 451/4، 19/5، 280/7]
◄ Hafiz Ibn Hibban said:
“He narrates extremely rejected (munkar) hadiths; he has narrated a fabricated compilation from his father «عن جده :» with the chain from his grandfather.” al-kh [كتاب المجروحين221/2] Also see: [حدیث 167 سابق اضواء المصابیح 158]
That makes one independent of this extremely weak narration. «والحمد لله»
