Hadith 2091

حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الصَّنْعَانِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَوْزَاعِيُّ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ ، عَنْ هِلَالِ بْنِ أَبِي مَيْمُونَةَ ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ ، عَنْ رِفَاعَةَ بْنِ عَرَابَةَ الْجُهَنِيِّ ، قَالَ : " كَانَتْ يَمِينُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الَّتِي يَحْلِفُ بِهَا أَشْهَدُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ ، وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ " .
´It was narrated that Rifa'ah bin 'Arabah A-Juhani said:` "The swearing of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) when he took an oath and I bear witness before Allah was: 'By the One in Whose Hand is my soul."'

Benefits and Issues:
➊ It is permissible, when necessary, to swear an oath in order to assure the addressee of one’s statement or for emphasis.

➋ Just as the name of Allah is invoked for an oath, likewise, the attributes of Allah Most High may also be mentioned.

➌ The meaning of an oath is that Allah is a witness to the fact that such-and-such matter is as stated. Now, if this statement is false, then invoking the name of Allah at this point is a great act of disrespect, because Allah Most High cannot be made a witness to a lie.
