Hadith 2090

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُصْعَبٍ ، عَنْ الْأَوْزَاعِيِّ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ ، عَنْ هِلَالِ بْنِ أَبِي مَيْمُونَةَ ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ ، عَنْ رِفَاعَةَ الْجُهَنِيِّ ، قَالَ : كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا حَلَفَ قَالَ : " وَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ " .
´It was narrated that Rifa'ah Al - Juhani said:` "When the Prophet (ﷺ) took an oath he would say: 'By the One in Whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad."'

Benefits and Issues:
➊ It is permissible, when necessary, to swear an oath in order to assure the addressee of one’s statement or for emphasis.

➋ Just as the name of Allah is invoked for an oath, likewise, the attributes of Allah Most High may also be mentioned.

➌ The meaning of an oath is that Allah is a witness to the fact that such-and-such matter is as stated. Now, if this statement is false, then invoking the name of Allah at this point is a great act of disrespect, because Allah Most High cannot be made a witness to a lie.
