´It was narrated from Anas bin Malik that:` The Messenger of Allah said: "Every caller who invites people to misguidance and is followed, will have a burden of sin equal to that of those who follow him, without that detracting from their burden in the slightest. And every caller who invites people to true guidance and is followed, will have a reward equal to that of those who follow him, without that detracting from their reward in the slightest.'"

Brief Explanation
1؎: Shirk (associating partners with Allah) and bid‘ah (religious innovation), things prohibited and unlawful in the Shari‘ah, and all acts of immorality and wickedness are included in misguidance, such that the one who calls towards them will bear the punishment for his followers as well, and he himself will also receive the penalty for his own sins. As for guidance, it includes tawhid (monotheism), adherence to the Sunnah, and all the Sunan (recommended acts), wajibat (obligatory acts), and fara’id (obligatory duties). The one who calls towards these will receive the reward of those who accept these matters, as well as the reward for his own righteous deeds. Therefore, just as there is virtue for the caller to Allah in this and similar ahadith, there is also a severe warning for the evil scholars (‘ulama’ as-su’) and false callers (du‘at al-batil).

English Commentary: By misguidance is meant shirk (associating partners with Allah), innovation (bid‘ah), immorality (fisq), wickedness (fujur), and all those actions which are prohibited and unlawful in the Shari‘ah. Whoever calls towards, encourages, or assists in such an act will bear a sin equal to the total sin of all those people who commit that wrongful act because of him. And by guidance is meant actions such as tawhid (affirming the oneness of Allah), following the Sunnah, fulfilling obligations (wajibat), and abstaining from sins, etc. The one who invites to these will receive a reward equal to the total reward of all those individuals who perform that good deed as a result of his influence.
