´It was narrated that 'Aishah said:` "I never felt as jealous of any woman as I did of Khadijah, because I saw how the Messenger of Allah remembered her, and his Lord had told him to give her the glad tidings of a house in Paradise made of Qasab."
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:
➊
In this hadith, the word "ghayrah" is used.
By this is meant the jealousy that a woman feels towards her co-wives.
This emotion is natural among women and expresses their love for their husband, so it should be tolerated as long as it does not lead to any wrongdoing.
➋
This hadith expresses the superiority and elevated status of Khadijah radi Allahu anha.
➌
The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam gave glad tidings of Paradise to some individuals besides the ten companions who were promised Paradise (asharah mubasharah).
Among the Companions, these individuals also hold a very high rank.
➍
"Qasab" refers to something long and hollow from the inside, such as bamboo, etc. By this is also meant a palace made of pearls, as some believers will be given large palaces made from single pearls.
Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah narrated from Abu Musa al-Ash'ari that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
"In Paradise, there will be a tent made of a hollow pearl, its width will be sixty miles.
In every corner of it will be the family of the believer (maidens and wives),
who will not see each other. (The maidens on one side will be concealed from those on the other side.)"
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Tafsir, Surah al-Rahman, Chapter: 'Maidens secluded in tents', Hadith: 4879.)
➎
The statement of Imam Ibn Majah rahimahullah means that the hollow pearl will be made of gold, which will possess the grandeur of a spacious palace from the inside, and it will be specifically for Khadijah radi Allahu anha.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) greatly honored the days spent with Khadijah (radi Allahu anha). In fact, there is an even more explicit hadith in which an old woman came to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
“How are you, and how have you been? How have you fared after us?” She replied:
“O Messenger of Allah, may my parents be sacrificed for you! I am well.”
When she left, I said:
“O Messenger of Allah! You spoke to this old woman with great attention.”
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
“She used to come during the time of Khadijah, and she is her friend.
Loyalty to old ties and good conduct is a part of faith.”
(Fath al-Bari: 10/536)
(2)
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), in honoring his past relationship with Khadijah (radi Allahu anha), used to treat her friends with great kindness.

Hadith Commentary:
In another narration, it is mentioned that Aisha (radi Allahu anha) said, "O Messenger of Allah! You used to praise an old woman, but she has passed away and Allah has given you a wife better than her." The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) replied, "I have not been given a woman better than her." Since the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not reproach Aisha (radi Allahu anha) for this, it is understood that her jealousy, which commonly occurs among co-wives, is excused.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
A woman’s jealousy towards her husband’s other wife is due to her belief that he loves the other wife more.
Aishah radi Allahu anha also felt jealousy towards Khadijah radi Allahu anha because the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would frequently remember her, and frequent mention indicates abundant love.
(2)
From this hadith, it is understood that Aishah radi Allahu anha would feel jealousy towards the other noble wives, but she exhibited even greater jealousy regarding Khadijah radi Allahu anha, even though she had already passed away.
In one narration, Aishah radi Allahu anha said:
“O Messenger of Allah! You keep praising an old woman, even though Allah, the Exalted, has given you a better wife than her.”
He replied:
“He has not given me a better wife than her.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Manaqib al-Ansar, Hadith: 3821; and Musnad Ahmad: 6/117, 118, and this is his wording)
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not reproach Aishah radi Allahu anha for expressing this kind of jealousy.
It is thus understood that her jealousy was not blameworthy, because such jealousy regarding a co-wife is natural.
