Hadith 1981

´Urwah bin Zubair narrated that 'Aishah said:` "I did not know until Zainab burst in on me without permission and she was angry. Then she said: 'O Messenger of Allah, is it enough for you that the young daughter of Abu Bakr waves her hands in front of you?' Then she turned to me, but I ignored her until the Prophet said: 'You should say something to defend yourself.' So I turned on her, (and replied to her) until I saw that her mouth had become dry, and she did not say anything back to me. And I saw the Prophet with his face shining." (Hasan).

Brief Explanation
1؎: Zaynab bint Jahsh radi Allahu anha was a beautiful and noble woman from the Quraysh family, and among the wives of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, she alone claimed equality with Aisha radi Allahu anha. She used to say: "My marriage was performed by Allah Ta'ala above the seven heavens, while your marriage was performed by your family." She was upset because the attention of the Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was more towards Umm al-Mu'minin Aisha radi Allahu anha, and she was complaining about this. Umm al-Mu'minin Aisha radi Allahu anha was referred to by her with contempt as «بُنَيَّةُ» (which is a diminutive form of "bint"), meaning "little girl," "young girl." [She implied:] "You are infatuated with Aisha and enamored by her; you do not care about the other wives, nor do you pay attention to anyone else." Umm al-Mu'minin Aisha radi Allahu anha turned her shirt inside out and exposed her arm. The fact that Umm al-Mu'minin Aisha radi Allahu anha responded and Umm al-Mu'minin Zaynab radi Allahu anha, who was complaining unjustly, was defeated, pleased the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and as a result, his face brightened. In another narration, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said to Zaynab radi Allahu anha: "Do you not know, she is the daughter of Abu Bakr?" This momentary, jealousy-driven quarrel between co-wives is a pleasant aspect of family life, and in it lies a test of the husband's wisdom, forbearance, and patience.

Benefits and Issues:

Umm al-Mu’minin (Mother of the Believers) Zaynab bint Jahsh radi Allahu anha was the paternal cousin of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Her mother’s name was Umaymah bint Abd al-Muttalib. (Tahdhib al-Tahdhib, by Hafiz Ibn Hajar, biography of Zaynab bint Jahsh) Allah Ta’ala arranged the marriage of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam to Zaynab bint Jahsh radi Allahu anha through revelation. There was no need for the customary offer and acceptance (ijab wa qubul) in this world. See: (Surah al-Ahzab, Ayah: 37)

The expression of anger by Zaynab radi Allahu anha towards Aisha radi Allahu anha was due to those natural emotions that one co-wife may have towards another, which is why she called Aisha radi Allahu anha “baniyyah” (little daughter, girl). The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam permitting Aisha radi Allahu anha to respond was based on justice, so when Aisha silenced Zaynab radi Allahu anhuma, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was pleased. Minor matters and small quarrels among women should be overlooked, or they should be resolved in an appropriate manner.
