Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:

For a husband to spend the night with his wife according to the turn (bari) is the right of the woman; therefore, she can also forgo her right and give it to someone else.

Leaving one's turn does not mean that all the rights of the woman are forfeited.
In such a case, the man should pay special attention to fulfilling the other rights.

It was not obligatory upon the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) to stay with his wives according to the turn (bari).
Allah the Exalted said:

“Of them, you may put off whom you please, and you may take to yourself whom you please; and if you desire any whom you have set aside, there is no blame on you.” ( , al-Ahzab: 51)
Despite this, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would observe the turns.
This is the perfection of your (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) noble character.

Hadith Commentary:
Lady Sawdah radi Allahu anha did this in her old age so that the Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would not divorce her.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
In one narration, it is clarified that when Sawda bint Zam‘a radi Allahu anha became advanced in age and feared that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam might separate from her, she said:
O Messenger of Allah! I give my turn to Aisha radi Allahu anha.
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam accepted her request.
(Sunan Abi Dawud, Kitab al-Nikah, Hadith: 2135)
(2)
When someone gifts her turn to a co-wife, then she will receive the same day as her own turn.
If it is consecutive, then she will have two days in a row; otherwise, there will be a gap between those days.
If the remaining wives agree to the subsequent days, then she may also receive two days together.

Hadith Commentary:
Vocabulary of the Hadith:
مَسْلاَخٌ: skin, hide—that is, my desire and wish was this.
I would become like her,
because she was extremely dignified and serious,
very generous, patient, and devoted in worship.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Lady Sawdah radi Allahu anha sensed that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would divorce her, and indeed the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did divorce her.
➋ Then, upon her request—that she wished to be raised on the Day of Resurrection among the wives of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam—the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam took her back.
➌ Perhaps the wisdom in this was that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam wanted to practically explain the interpretation of this blessed verse: that if a woman fears ill-treatment or aversion from her husband, then there is no blame upon them if they reconcile between themselves (al-Nisa: 4:128) .
➍ Also, by practically giving divorce and then taking her back, he left an example for the Ummah, because he was the teacher of the Book.
➎ Since Lady Sawdah radi Allahu anha, due to old age, no longer had desire for men,
she gave her turn (night) to Lady Aishah radi Allahu anha, because she was the beloved of the Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
➏ From this, it is understood that a woman can give her turn to her co-wife, because it is her right, but the husband's consent is necessary.
➐ If the wife gives up her turn, then the husband can give it to whomever he wishes.
➑ This is the position of the Shafi'is and Hanbalis, and among the Hanafis, Allamah Ibn al-Humam and Shami have adopted this position. However, if the days of the two wives are not consecutive, then this cannot be made consecutive without the consent of the remaining wives.

This concession will be irrevocable and non-returnable, provided that the specific days have not been designated.
