1؎ : In the narration of Sahih Muslim, it is mentioned that a command was revealed in the Noble Qur’an that ten instances of suckling—such that certainty is attained regarding the suckling—render marriage unlawful. Then, this command was abrogated by the command of five instances of suckling. And when the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) passed away, the verse regarding “five known (i.e., five instances of suckling)” was still being recited in the Qur’an. Imam Nawawi says that this means the abrogation of the number five occurred so late that the event of the Prophet’s (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) passing took place, and some people, still considering the number five as Qur’an, continued to recite it, because its abrogation was revealed right at the time of his passing. He further stated that there are three types of abrogation: first, that in which both the ruling and the recitation are abrogated, such as the verse regarding ten instances of suckling; second, that in which the recitation is abrogated but the ruling remains, such as the verse regarding five instances of suckling, and the verse of stoning (ayat al-rajm); and third, that in which the ruling is abrogated but the recitation remains, such as the verse of bequest (wasiyyah), etc.
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues: ➊ In this narration, it is stated with uncertainty whether the command was revealed as ten times or five times, but the aforementioned hadith in Sahih Muslim has clarified that the command was revealed as five times.
➋ The recitation of some verses of the Noble Qur’an was abrogated while their ruling remained. The meaning of abrogation of recitation is that they are neither to be written in the Noble Qur’an nor recited in prayer, and in such matters, their ruling will not be considered as Qur’anic. Despite this, the ruling mentioned therein will be acted upon, just as many other rulings are acted upon which are not mentioned in the Qur’an but are established from hadith.

Aishah said “In what was sent down in the Quran ten suckling’s made marriage unlawful, but they were abrogated by five known ones and when the Prophet ﷺ dies, these words were among what was recited in the Quran. ”
Hafiz Nadeem Zaheer
Fiqh al-Hadith Imam Nawawi rahimahullah states: «يقراو معناه: ان النسخ بخمس رضعات تاخر انزاله جدا حتي انه صلى الله عليه وسلم توفي و بعض الناس يقرا خمس رضعات» “That is, the recitation regarding five sucklings (khams rid‘aat) was abrogated at the very last moment, to the extent that (soon after this) the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam passed away. (This is the reason that, due to it not being known to everyone,) some people continued to recite the verse of five sucklings.” [شرح النووی 35/4]
Benefits and Issues: ➊ The literal and technical meaning of the word (al-rad‘ah) as mentioned in the hadiths is that a child takes the breast into his mouth and begins to suck milk, and then leaves it of his own accord without any external cause. This constitutes one rad‘ah. The same meaning applies to (al-massah).
➋ The purpose of the statement of Aisha radi Allahu anha is that the abrogation (naskh) was revealed only a short time before the death of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, so there were some people who, not having received the information, continued to recite these words, but later their recitation was abrogated, although the ruling remained.
