´It was narrated from `Aqil bin Abu Talib:` that he married a woman from Banu Jusham, and they said: “May you live in harmony and have many sons.” He said: “Do not say that, rather say what the Messenger of Allah said: 'Allahumma barik lahum wa barik `alaihim (O Allah, bless them and bestow blessings upon them).' ”

Benefits and Issues:

It is Sunnah to congratulate the bride and groom on the occasion of marriage and to supplicate goodness for them.

The best way to offer congratulations and supplication for goodness is to use those blessed words which were uttered by the noble tongue of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

Even if non-Islamic customs appear outwardly harmless and no fault is perceived in them, it is still appropriate to abandon them and adopt Islamic customs, so that distinction from non-Muslims remains. Therefore, it is extremely necessary to avoid such customs and traditions which are contrary to Islamic etiquette of social conduct or are connected to non-Islamic beliefs.
