´It was narrated that:` Abu Bakr bin Abu Jahm bin Sukhair Al-Adawi said: “I heard Fathima bint Qais say: 'The Messenger of Allah said to me: “When you become lawful, tell me.” So I told him.' Then Muawiyah, Abu Jahm bin Sukhair and Usamah bin Zaid proposed marriage to her. The Messenger of Allah said: 'As for Muawiyah, he is a poor man who has no money. As from Abu Jahm he is a man who habitually beats woman. But Usamah (is good).' She gestured with her hand, saying: 'Usamah, Usamah!?' The Messenger of Allah said to her: 'Obedience to Allah and obedience to His Messenger is better for you.' She said: 'So I married him and I was pleased with him.' ”
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:
➊
Before a woman has made a decision to accept a particular man, another person may send a proposal.
➋
If concealing someone’s defect poses a risk of harm to a Muslim, then sincerity demands that the defect be disclosed.
This situation is not counted among the prohibited forms of backbiting.
The same wisdom applies in critiquing the narrators of hadith: so that something not established from the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is not mistakenly considered a legal ruling; therefore, this too is permissible.
➌
When a slave is freed, his status and rank in the Islamic society is not less than that of other free individuals.
➍
There is benefit in obeying the command of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), even if outwardly it may seem unpleasant.
The indication of Fatimah (radi Allahu anha) meant an expression of non-acceptance, because the respected father of Usamah, Zayd (radi Allahu anhu), had spent some time as a slave.
