حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي قَزْعَةَ ، عَنْ حَكِيمِ بْنِ مُعَاوِيَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا حَقُّ الْمَرْأَةِ عَلَى الزَّوْجِ ؟ ، قَالَ : " أَنْ يُطْعِمَهَا إِذَا طَعِمَ ، وَأَنْ يَكْسُوَهَا إِذَا اكْتَسَى ، وَلَا يَضْرِبِ الْوَجْهَ ، وَلَا يُقَبِّحْ ، وَلَا يَهْجُرْ إِلَّا فِي الْبَيْتِ " .
´It was narrated from Hakim bin Muawiyah, from his father, that:` a man asked the Prophet(ﷺ): “What are the right of the woman over her husband?” He said: “That he should feed her as he feeds himself and clothe her as he clothes himself; he should not strike her on the face nor disfigure her, and he should not abandon her except in the house (as a form of discipline).” (Hassan)

Islam has determined the rights and duties of every individual in order to establish society on correct foundations.
By keeping these in view, peace can be established in society.
➋
Just as men have rights, women also have rights. Allah the Exalted has said:
﴿وَلَهُنَّ مِثْلُ الَّذِي عَلَيْهِنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ﴾ ()
“And for women are rights similar to those upon them according to what is recognized (as good).”
In order to maintain peace and tranquility in the home, it is necessary that both observe each other's rights.

It is the man's duty to provide for the woman's basic needs, i.e., food, clothing, and residence, etc.

The man has the right to appropriately admonish the woman if she errs.
➎
If mild admonition does not have an effect, then a slight physical punishment may also be given, but striking the face is prohibited.
➏ (لَا یقبح)
One meaning of this is that, when reprimanding, he should not use inappropriate words, as was customary among the Arabs who would say (قَبَّحَ اللهُ وَجْهَكَ)
“May Allah make your face ugly,”
or (قَبَّحَکَ الله)
“May Allah make you ugly.”
One should avoid such insults and curses.
The second meaning is that he should not strike the face, for striking hard may leave a mark on the face and make it ugly; therefore, it is said that he should not make her ugly.

To express displeasure as a form of admonition, it is permissible to temporarily stop speaking, but it is not appropriate to expel the wife from the home or for the husband himself to leave the home for several days.
With both present in the home, there is hope that the displeasure will soon be resolved.

At the time of necessity, in the case of discipline, it is prohibited to strike the face. If separation from the bed is required, it should be within the house itself; do not expel her from your home. Even in verbal reprimand, it is impermissible to invoke curses (bad-dua).
The Noble Qur’an has stated the etiquettes of discipline: (And those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance—then advise them; forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them. But if they obey you, seek no means against them) (, al-Nisa). And those women whose disobedience you fear, admonish them, separate from them in beds, and punish them by striking. If they obey you, then do not seek a way against them.
