Hadith 185

´It was narrated that 'Adi bin Hatim said:` "The Messenger of Allah said: 'There is no one among you but his Lord will speak to him without any intermediary between them. He will look to his right and will not see anything but that which he sent forth. He will look to his left and will not see anything but that which he sent forth. Then he will look in front of him and will be faced with the Fire. So whoever among you can protect himself from fire, even by means of half a date, let him do so.'"

Explanation & Benefits

(1)
In this noble hadith, there is affirmation of the attribute of Speech (kalam) for Allah, the Exalted. (A servant will have to account for his own deeds himself, therefore one should not rely on the intercession of any saintly person, etc.)

(3)
Righteous deeds are necessary for protection from Hellfire.

(4)
Charity (sadaqah) is also a righteous deed that safeguards from the punishment of Allah.

(5)
If one does not have the ability to perform a major righteous deed, then one should perform a minor deed; even a small good deed is better than doing nothing.

(6)
No good deed should be considered insignificant; even a small act of goodness done with sincerity can become a means of attaining Allah’s mercy.

Rather, every believer will see Allah Ta'ala without any veil, and will converse with Him. O Allah! Grant us also this rank, Ameen.

Hadith Commentary:

The mentioned hadith is an excerpt from a lengthy narration which Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has presented in an abridged form.
At the end of this hadith, these words appear:
“One of you will stand before his Lord at the time of meeting.
There will be no interpreter between Allah and the servant to perform the duties of interpretation.
Allah ta‘ala will say to him:
‘Did I not send a messenger to you to convey My commands?’ The servant will reply:
‘Why not, O my Lord!’ Then Allah ta‘ala will say:
‘Did I not give you wealth and bestow My mercy upon you?’ The servant will say:
‘Why not.’ After this, the servant will look to his right and will see nothing but the Hellfire, and likewise, when he looks to his left, he will see nothing except the Hellfire.
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam finally said:
‘Protect yourselves from the Fire, even if it be by giving half a date in charity.
If a person does not find even half a date, then let him guide another with a good word.’
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Manaqib, Hadith: 3595)

Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has established from this hadith that on the Day of Resurrection, at the time of reckoning, the believers will see their Lord and will hear His speech.
This means that Allah ta‘ala has veils due to which He is concealed and veiled from His creation, but the people of innovation (ahl al-bid‘ah) deny these veils.
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has transmitted from Ibn Battal that what is meant here is the affliction of the eyes which prevents seeing Allah ta‘ala, and the meaning of the removal of the veil is that this affliction will be removed from the eyes of the believers.
(Fath al-Bari: 13/531)
Whereas, from numerous ahadith, the existence of veils for Allah ta‘ala is established.
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
“Allah ta‘ala has veils of light.
If He were to remove them, the radiance of His Face would burn everything as far as His gaze reaches.”
(Sahih Muslim, al-Iman, Hadith: 445(179))
Imam Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullah, in his book
(Naqd Ta’sis al-Jahmiyyah)
has thoroughly refuted the arguments that the deniers may present in this regard.
It is worthy of study.
Only those whose nature has been corrupted deny or interpret away these luminous veils.
May Allah protect us from them.

Hadith Commentary:
In this hadith, it is clearly established that Allah will speak directly to His servant, without any intermediary, by Himself.
After tawhid (monotheism), among the deeds that will be of benefit, helping a poor, needy, orphan, or widow in the way of Allah holds great importance. No matter how insignificant that help may seem, if it is done with sincerity, Allah will greatly increase its reward.
The smallest of help can be as little as half a date.
May Allah grant us the ability and accept it.
Hazrat Adi bin Hatim passed away in Kufa in the year 67 AH at the age of 110.
He was a great elder of a noble family.
He was the son of the very generous Hatim Tai.
He accepted Islam in Sha'ban of the year 7 AH.
Some historians have written his age as one hundred and eighty years.
Radi Allahu anhu wa ardaah.

Hadith Commentary:
In this hadith, it is explicitly stated that Allah, the Exalted, will speak directly to His servant.
There will be no intermediary or interpreter between them.
After the oneness of Allah (tawhid), among the deeds that will be of benefit on the Day of Resurrection, helping a poor, needy, or destitute person in the way of Allah holds great significance.
Even if that help is minor, if it is done with sincerity, Allah, the Exalted, will greatly increase its reward.
If one does not even have the strength for that, then saying a good word to others also carries much weight.
If making well-wishing and kind speech towards others a habit in one’s life, then this deed too is very beneficial and fruitful in the sight of Allah, the Exalted.

Explanation:
1:
That is, one should adopt the means of protection from Hellfire,
therefore, give as much charity and alms as possible,
and continue to perform righteous deeds,
because these are the means of protection and salvation from Hellfire.

Benefits and Issues:

➊ On the Day of Resurrection, Allah Himself will take account from every individual. Speech (kalam) is an attribute of Allah, the true reality and modality (kayfiyyah) of which we do not know; however, it cannot be likened to the speech of the creation. One should avoid interpreting (ta’wil) such attributes of Allah. Every person will have to account for his good and bad deeds; therefore, it is incorrect to be content by saying that if I commit such-and-such sin, then many others also commit this sin. Or, if I do not care about such-and-such good deed, then many others are also deprived of this good deed. Such statements are satanic whispers (wasawis) through which he deprives Muslims of good deeds and repentance. One should not abandon small good deeds by considering them insignificant; who knows whether one will get the opportunity for a major good deed or not, and even if one does a major deed, how deficient will it be? Allah knows whether it will even be worthy of acceptance or not. If someone performs a small good deed, one should not criticize him; perhaps that very deed will become a means of salvation for him.
