Hadith 1835

´It was narrated that:` Umm Salamah said: “The Messenger of Allah enjoined charity upon us. Zainab, the wife of Abdullah said: 'Will it be accepted as charity on my part if I give charity to my husband who is poor, and to the children of a brother of mine who are orphans, spending such and such on them, and in all circumstances?' He said: 'Yes.'”

Benefits and Issues:
➊ The expenses of the wife and children are the responsibility of the man; the woman is not responsible for the expenses of the man or the children. Therefore, a man's spending on his wife and children cannot be counted as zakat. However, if a wife spends on her husband or bears the expenses of the children, it will be considered charity (sadaqah). Zakat is also a form of charity which is obligatory; therefore, a wife can give zakat to her husband if the husband is needy and the wife possesses the nisab (minimum amount liable for zakat). A woman, like a man, has an independent right of ownership. She can also earn money through trade, handicrafts, or employment, and she is entitled to a share in the inheritance from her parents, husband, or other relatives. However, she should choose such employment or business in which it is possible to remain separate from men and to be safe from the lustful gazes of men. If relatives are deserving of assistance, then the reward for financially helping them is greater than giving charity to others.
