´It was narrated from Amr bin:` Shu'aib, form his father, that his grandfather said: “The Messenger of Allah only prescribed Zakat on these five things: wheat, barley, dates, raisins and corn.”
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:
➊ The mentioned narration is weak in its chain of transmission; however, the ruling is as stated: for those agricultural produce which can be dried and stored, zakat is obligatory. Its nisab (minimum threshold) is five wasq, that is, twenty mann. (Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 1794)
When wheat and barley are separated from the chaff and measured or weighed, if they reach twenty mann, zakat becomes obligatory.
If dates and raisins also become suitable for storage after being dried, they should be measured or weighed.
The amount of zakat for these items is mentioned in the next chapter.
