´Khalid bin Aslam, the freed slave of Umar bin Khattab, said:` “I went out with Abdullah bin Umar, and a Bedouin met him and recited to him the words of Allah: 'And those who hoard up gold and silver (the money, the Zakah of which has not been paid) and spend them not in the way of Allah.' Ibn Umar Said to him: 'The one who hoards it and does not pay Zakat due on it, woe to him. But this was before the (ruling on) Zakat was revealed. When it was revealed, Allah made it a purification of wealth.' Then he turned away and said: 'I do not mind if I have the (the equivalent of) Uhud in gold, provided that I know how much it is and I pay Zakat on it, and I use it in obedience of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime'”

1؎: Abdullah ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhuma) was a very wealthy man. This Bedouin (villager) must have asked him for something, and when he did not give it, the Bedouin recited this verse to embarrass him. Abdullah ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhuma) then explained its interpretation: this verse was revealed at a time when the command of zakat (obligatory charity) had not yet been given, and it was prohibited to simply acquire wealth and keep it hoarded. Afterwards, the command of zakat was revealed, so now any lawful wealth from which zakat is given is not considered kanz (hoarded treasure), even if it amounts to millions. Rather, lawful wealth is a great blessing from Allah Ta'ala. And the acts of worship that a person can perform in a state of wealth—such as charity and almsgiving, preparing Islamic armies, and assisting in religious education—are impossible to do in poverty and destitution. However, when Allah Ta'ala bestows lawful wealth, gratitude for it is to spend it according to Allah's command: to eat from it oneself, to feed others, to maintain family ties, to build madrasas and orphanages, mosques and wells, to help travelers and the needy. And the wealthy person who spends lawful wealth in seeking Allah's pleasure in this way has a very high rank. Ibn Hajar rahimahullah said: Abdullah ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhuma) freed a thousand slaves and gave a thousand horses to the mujahideen in the path of Allah, and along with this, he detested worldly power and positions.
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues: ➊ Spending in the way of Allah is among the important matters of the religion. This command existed even before zakat was made obligatory, and it still exists; however, previously, its minimum amount was not specified, but later this amount was also determined.
➋ Apart from obligatory zakat and other mandatory expenditures, spending in the path of righteousness is a voluntary act of worship.
➌ By paying zakat, the remaining wealth becomes purified; otherwise, all the wealth remains impure.
➍ Becoming wealthy through lawful means is a favor and blessing from Allah, for which one should express gratitude by continually helping those in need.
