Hadith 1776

´It was narrated that ‘Aishah said:` “I used to enter the house to relieve myself, and there was a sick person there, and I only inquired after him as I was passing through.” She said: “And the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would not enter the house except to relieve himself, then they were observing I’tikaf.”

It is prohibited for the person in i‘tikaf (spiritual retreat) to leave the mosque without necessity.

It is permissible to leave the mosque for the purpose of relieving oneself.

If there is no arrangement for a toilet attached to the mosque, the person in i‘tikaf may go home for this purpose.

Taking a ritual bath (ghusl) due to major impurity (janabah) is also a necessity for which it is essential to leave the mosque; therefore, the person in i‘tikaf may go outside for this purpose as well.

It is not permissible to leave i‘tikaf to visit a sick person, but if one has to go outside for a legitimate reason and meets a sick person on the way, it is permissible to inquire about his condition; however, it is not permissible to stop and converse with him.
