Hadith 176

´Abu Ghalib narrated that Abu Umamah said:` "(The Khawarij) are the worst of the slain who are killed under heaven, and the best of the slain are those who were killed by them. Those (Khawarij) are the dogs of Hell. Those people were Muslims but they became disbelievers." I said: "O Abu Umamah, is that your opinion?" He said: "Rather I heard it from the Messenger of Allah."

Brief Explanation
1؎: That is, in this killing and bloodshed, you have become like the disbelievers of the Age of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah). Whereas in another hadith, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: «لا ترجعوا بعدي كفارا يضرب بعضكم رقاب بعض» “O Muslims! Do not become disbelievers after me, striking the necks of one another.” In the Age of Ignorance, among the Arabs, under the tribal system, incidents of bloodshed and killing would frequently occur over minor issues; human life had no value. Islam gave great respect to human life, and declared bloodshed without a real cause to be a grave sin and crime. Now, the newly Muslim society had become bound by discipline; there was a permanent system of legal punishments (hudud), retribution (qisas), and blood money (diyah) for crimes. Therefore, the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) warned the Muslims in this hadith against the wrong ways of the Age of Ignorance, and addressed them in such a manner that, in the true sense, people would keep themselves away from chaos, killing, and bloodshed. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) trained the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) in such a way that they took utmost care to keep themselves distant from the practices of the Age of Ignorance, so that their deeds would not be rendered void or wasted.

Commentary:
(1)
In this, there is a severe condemnation of the Khawarij, and a clear statement regarding their being disbelievers (kuffar) and destined for Hellfire.

(2)
From this, it is understood that their beliefs are those of disbelief (kufr), due to which they were declared to have left Islam and adopted disbelief.

(3)
The Muslims who fought against the Khawarij attained a high status and virtue.

(4)
From this, the virtue of Ali (radi Allahu anhu) is established, because he fought against the Khawarij and was martyred at the hands of a Khariji.

Benefit:
In this hadith, the condemnation of the Khawarij is mentioned—those who declare everyone to be disbelievers (kafir), consider rebellion against them permissible, and unjustly kill Muslims. Such people are destined for Hell. We too, in Pakistan, are confronted with some similar takfiri and khariji individuals, who are bent on terrorism in a covert manner and have killed thousands of Muslims in Pakistan through suicide attacks. May Allah grant guidance to these people, ameen. Furthermore, this hadith is evidence that the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) were truthful individuals, and were far removed from falsehood.
