Benefits and Issues:
(1)
Imam Tirmidhi rahimahullah has stated regarding this hadith that it is actually the legal verdict (fatwa) of Abdullah radi Allahu anhu; it is not authentically narrated as a statement of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam (Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, al-Sawm, Chapter: What Has Been Related About Expiation, Hadith: 718).
(2)
The heading that Imam Ibn Majah rahimahullah has written for this hadith indicates that, in his view, if the deceased’s failure to make up the fasts was not due to negligence, but rather he did not get the opportunity to make them up, then there is no need to feed (the poor) on his behalf. Note:
(In the chain of narration, Ash'ath bin Sawar al-Kindi is weak,
and moreover, it is more correct that this narration is mawquf.)
