Hadith 1739

´It was narrated from Rabi’ah bin Ghaz that he asked ‘Aishah about the fasting of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). She said:` “He used to make sure he fasted on Mondays and Thursdays.”

Brief Explanation
1؎: One reason given for this is that on these two days, deeds are presented before Allah. It is narrated from Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: «عرض الأعمال يوم الاثنين والخميس فأحب أن يعرض عملى وأنا صائم» — that is, on Mondays and Thursdays, deeds are presented before Allah the Exalted, so I wish that my deeds be presented while I am fasting. The second reason is mentioned in the narration of Sahih Muslim, where the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was asked about fasting on Monday, and he replied: "That is the day on which I was born, and on it I was sent (as a Prophet), or on that day revelation was sent down to me." Therefore, if anyone wishes to commemorate the Mawlid (birth) of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, the prescribed (masnun) way is to fast on that day, not to hold processions, indulge in superstitions, or waste millions of rupees on decorating streets and alleys. All of this is innovation (bid‘ah).

Benefit:
The meaning of "showing concern" is that they would fast with intention and would strive not to miss fasting on that day. The reason for this concern is clarified in the next hadith.

One reason given for this is that on these two days, deeds are presented before Allah, as narrated from Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Deeds are presented (to Allah) on Mondays and Thursdays, so I love that my deeds be presented while I am fasting.” Another reason is that which is mentioned in the narration of Muslim, that when the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was asked about fasting on Monday, he said: “That is the day on which I was born and on it I was sent as a Prophet, or on it revelation was sent down to me.”
