Hadith 171

´It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said:` "The Messenger of Allah said: 'There are those who recite the Qur'an but it does not go any deeper than their collarbones. They will pass through Islam like an arrow passing through its target.'"

Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Imam Ibn Majah rahimahullah has mentioned this hadith in the chapter concerning the Khawarij. From this, it is understood that, in his view, the individuals referred to in this hadith are the Khawarij. However, the wording of the hadith is general; therefore, those people of later times are also included in this warning—those who outwardly call themselves Muslims and recite the Qur’an and hadith, but their efforts are directed towards proving un-Islamic customs and actions contrary to Islam as if they are part of Islam. For this purpose, sometimes they distort the meanings of the texts of the Qur’an and hadith, sometimes they deny authentic ahadith, and sometimes they claim that in the present circumstances and in this era of progress, such-and-such rulings of Islam are no longer practicable.

In this way, they act against Islam.

May Allah, the Exalted, protect us from their evil.

Ameen.
