Hadith 1698

´It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:` "The people will remain upon goodness so long as they hasten to break the fast. Hasten to break the fast, for the Jews delay it."

Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefit:
The Jews are afflicted with excess and negligence in their legal matters. Muslims should avoid both excess and negligence, and remain adherent to the Prophetic Sunnah. Those people who, in the name of caution, cause delays should take a lesson from this hadith as to whom they are actually following.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ In this statement, the emphasis is not on greed for food and drink at the time of breaking the fast (iftar), but rather it is an encouragement and exhortation to hasten in obeying Allah’s command and acting upon the Sunnah of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
And this is indeed a sign of the dominance of the religion: that, in contrast to the opponents of Islam and those averse to the religion, one distinguishes oneself by acting upon all the commands of the religion, both major and minor, exactly as prescribed.

➋ Delaying iftar and the Maghrib prayer, and unnecessarily falling into doubt—thinking that perhaps the sun has not yet set, perhaps it has not yet set—is disliked (makruh).

Not Being Among Those Who Delay in Breaking the Fast
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
The religion will remain dominant as long as people hasten in breaking the fast, because the Jews and Christians delay it.

When the sun had set, (Sayyiduna) Umar radi Allahu anhu handed a vessel to the person next to him and said: Drink. Then he said: Perhaps you are among the «مُسَوِّفين» (those who delay in breaking the fast), who say: “A little while later, a little while later”?!

Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu used to write and send orders to his governors, commanding: Do not be among the musawwifin (those who delay) regarding breaking the fast, and do not wait for the gathering of the stars for the prayer.

Ibrahim al-Nakha’i rahimahullah said: To hasten in breaking the fast is from the Sunnah.

There is no value to one’s invented “caution” in opposition to the statement of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam; rather, this is a satanic whispering from which it is necessary to abstain.
