Hadith 1690

´It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:` “There are people who fast and get nothing from their fast except hunger, and there are those who pray and get nothing from their prayer but a sleepless night.”

Brief Explanation
1؎: That is, they do not attain the light of fasting (sawm) and worship, nor do they experience its delight and blessing. Rather, fasting and prayer (salat) are a burden and hardship for them; they consider merely remaining hungry during the day and staying awake at night to be sufficient, whereas this is their mistake. If they perform worship according to its etiquettes and conditions, it will be accepted, and they will also attain the blessing of light and delight from it. At that time, they will realize that the purpose of fasting and prayer is not merely to remain hungry and stay awake. It is regrettable that in our time there are many such people who perform fasting and prayer only outwardly, and do not attain any humility or submissiveness at all. Although for the common people even this is sufficient, and it is hoped that Allah, by His mercy, will accept it.

Benefits and Issues:

Righteous deeds are not accepted without sincerity (ikhlas).

Just as it is necessary to observe the outward pillars in worship, likewise the inner states—such as sincerity (ikhlas), love of Allah, fear of Allah, hope in Allah, etc.—are also required. In the absence of these, outward actions are of no benefit.

If, at any time, the required inner and heartfelt state is not present, one should not abandon the good deed. Because at the very least, this benefit will be attained: that one will not be counted among those who abandon obligatory acts. And by continuously performing that good deed, it can be hoped that some positive effect will certainly occur in the heart.

It is very important to observe the etiquettes (adab) of acts of worship.

Benefit:
This hadith proves that it is permissible to kiss one’s wife while fasting. It should be noted that a person who has self-control may do so, but one who does not have self-control should not kiss, lest he commit a sin during the fast, which would make expiation (kaffarah) obligatory upon him.
