Commentary:
(1)
In its chain of narration, there is a narrator, Abdul Muhaymin, who is weak; however, this hadith is also narrated in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim through other authentic chains. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of the Virtues of the Ansar, Chapter: The Statement of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam: "If there were no migration, I would have been one of the Ansar," Hadith: 3779; and Sahih Muslim, Book of Zakat, Chapter: Giving to those whose hearts are to be reconciled to Islam and patience with those whose faith is strong, Hadith: 1059) Therefore, this hadith is authentic.
(2)
This blessed statement was made by the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam after the Battle of Hunayn. In the distribution of the spoils, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not give them (the Ansar) anything at all. On this occasion, he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam made it clear that the self-sacrifice and bravery of the Ansar is not denied, but since they are closer to him sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and stronger in faith, their faith was relied upon, and instead, others were given who were in need of having their hearts reconciled.
(3)
From this blessed statement, the lofty status of the Ansar becomes clear, and that even in the sight of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, the Ansar held great importance.
(4)
In this hadith, the Ansar are described as "shiar" and the other Muslims as "dithar." "Shiar" refers to the garment that touches the wearer's body, and "dithar" is the clothing worn over the shiar. The purpose of this analogy was to express that the Ansar were honored with the special closeness of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
(5)
From this, it is understood that just as migration (hijrah) is a great deed, so too is helping and supporting the emigrants (muhajirun) a great deed.
(6)
After the Muhajirun, the Ansar are the most virtuous.
