´Mutarrif, from the tribe of Banu ‘Amir bin Sa’sa’ah narrated that ‘Uthman bin Abul-‘As Ath-Thaqafi invited him to drink some milk that he poured for him. Mutarrif said:` “I am fasting.” ‘Uthman said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: ‘Fasting is a shield against the Fire just like the shield of anyone of you against fighting.’”

Benefits and Issues:
➊
To present food and drink to a guest is included among the highest morals.
➋
If one is invited to food and drink, it is not obligatory to accept the invitation while observing a voluntary (nafl) fast.
➌
If, on some occasion, one has to reveal a good deed of theirs, this is not included in showing off (riya).
➍
Fasting protects from Hellfire.
Firstly, because it is a great act of virtue, due to which many sins are forgiven.
Secondly, because through fasting a person is saved from committing many sins, the commission of which could lead him to Hellfire.
Abstaining from sins and performing righteous deeds—both of these are means of entering Paradise and being saved from Hellfire.
