´It was narrated that Ibn ‘Umar said:` “We used to be guarded in our speech even with our wives at the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), fearing that Qur’an may be revealed amongst us, but when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) died, we began to speak freely.”

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues:

This demonstrates the respect and love that the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma‘in) held in their hearts for the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), such that they exercised caution even while speaking in his presence.

The faith of the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma‘in) was so strong that not only in the gathering of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), but even in solitude within their homes, they remained just as cautious in their words and actions.

It was not the belief of the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma‘in) that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) directly hears our conversations and sees our deeds. Rather, their belief was that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) could be informed of our actions through revelation (wahy).
