´It was narrated that Anas said:` “On the day when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) entered Al-Madinah, everything was lit up, and on the day when he died, everything went dark, and no sooner had we dusted off our hands (after burying him) but we felt that our hearts had changed.”*
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:
➊
The blessed person of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was a source of both spiritual and material blessings.
➋
A pure and clean heart perceives spiritual blessings.
The heart should be attentive towards Allah, and death should be remembered.
One should be diligent in reciting the Noble Qur’an, performing voluntary (nafl) prayers, and fasting.
If one adheres to lawful (halal) sustenance and truthfulness, the heart becomes illuminated.
As has been mentioned in various ahadith.
➌
The hearts of the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma‘in) had become so illuminated due to the company of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and his teaching and purification, that they would perceive the descent or reduction of spiritual lights and blessings just as an ordinary person perceives physical light and darkness.
➍
The illumination of the walls and surroundings upon the arrival of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) in Madinah is, firstly, due to the joy that the people of faith experienced upon seeing the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and attaining his neighborhood.
Secondly, it is due to the descent of those blessings and mercies which the people of Madinah received because of him (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
Similarly, the sense of darkness after the Prophet’s (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) passing contains both these aspects.
In a state of grief, nothing seems pleasant.
The heart finds no solace anywhere.
And after the passing of the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), it was no longer possible to directly benefit from the lights and blessings of prophethood.
➎
The change in the state of the hearts means that, due to the cessation of the company and teaching of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)—which was a major means of increasing faith—it was no longer possible to attain that level of spiritual state which was previously attained. Despite this, the faith of the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma‘in) remained the most complete and strongest in the Ummah.
