Hadith 1623

´It was narrated that ‘Aishah said:` “I saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) when he was dying, and there was a bowl of water next to him. He put his hand in the vessel and wiped his face with the water, and said: ‘O Allah, help me to bear the agonies of death.’”

This same incident is also found in Sahih al-Bukhari.
In it are these words: (Lā ilāha illā Allāh, inna lil-mawti sakarāt)
“There is no deity except Allah; indeed, death has agonies.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Maghazi, Chapter: The Illness and Death of the Prophet ﷺ, Hadith: 4449)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, in the last moments of his life, wiped his face with a hand moistened with water. The likely reason for this is that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had a severe fever in his final days.
Therefore, four days before his passing (on the night between Thursday and Friday),
at the time of ‘Isha, the Noble Prophet ﷺ performed a ritual bath (ghusl) so that the intensity of the fever might lessen and he could perform the congregational prayer, but due to the severity of his weakness, he was not able to go to the mosque.

Even in his final moments, the Noble Prophet ﷺ turned his attention to Allah and mentioned only Him. Therefore, a Muslim should, even in the most difficult circumstances, turn his attention solely to Allah Almighty.
