Hadith 1621

´It was narrated that ‘Aishah said:` “The wives of the Prophet (ﷺ) gathered together and not one of them lagged behind. Fatimah came, and her gait was like that of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). He said, ‘Welcome to my daughter.’ Then he made her sit to his left, and he whispered something to her, and she smiled. I said to her: ‘What made you weep?’ She said: ‘I will not disclose the secret of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).’ I said: ‘I never saw joy so close to grief as I saw today.’ When she wept I said: ‘Did the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) tell you some special words that were not for us, then you wept?’ And I asked her about what he had said. She said: ‘I will not disclose the secret of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).’ After he died I asked her what he had said, and she said: ‘He told me that Jibra’il used to review the Qur’an with him once each year, but he had reviewed it with him twice that year, (and he said:) “I do not think but that my time is near. You will be the first of my family to join me, and what a good predecessor I am for you.” So I wept. Then he whispered to me and said: “Will you not be pleased to be the leader of the women of this Ummah?” So I smiled.’”

Benefits and Issues:

This incident took place during the illness of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) before his passing, when all the Mothers of the Believers (radi Allahu anhunna) were present in the service of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
Maulana Safiur Rahman Mubarakpuri rahimahullah has, in "Ar-Raheeq Al-Makhtum," considered this to be an incident from the last day of the blessed life.
And he has stated that from some narrations it appears that this incident did not occur on the last day, but rather on one of the days of the last week.
And Allah knows best. See: (Ar-Raheeq Al-Makhtum, Urdu edition, Maktabah Salafiyyah, p. 628)
In this hadith, there is an expression of the honor and virtue of Fatimah (radi Allahu anha), to whom the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) granted a special secret.

It is not appropriate to disclose something that has been told as a secret, because a secret holds the status of a trust (amanah).
And to betray a trust is haram (forbidden).

The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) informing Fatimah (radi Allahu anha) of future events, and those events occurring exactly as foretold, is a proof of his prophethood and messengership.
All the prophecies made by the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) have been fulfilled exactly as stated.
As for those prophecies whose time of fulfillment has not yet come, we have faith that they too will certainly be fulfilled.

The mutual recitation (dawr) of the Qur'an among the memorizers (huffaz) and especially its observance in the blessed month of Ramadan is a Sunnah of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

In the latter part of one's life, there should be increased attention to righteous deeds.

If one learns of any pleasing news concerning friends, loved ones, or relatives, one should give them glad tidings.

Hadith Commentary:

In one narration, it is mentioned that when Fatimah (radi Allahu anha) came, her manner of walking was like that of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
“O dear daughter! Welcome.”
Then he seated her to his right or left side, then he spoke to her quietly, and she began to weep.
I asked:
“Why are you crying?” Then he spoke to her quietly again, and she laughed.
I said: “Today I have seen mixed emotions of grief and happiness together. I asked her about it, and she said:
‘I do not wish to disclose the secret of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).’
When the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) passed away, I asked her again, and she said:
‘The first time, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) quietly said to me:
“Jibril (alayhis salam) would review the Qur’an with me once every year, but this year he reviewed it with me twice.
I think that my death is near, and you will be the first among my family to join me.”
So I began to weep.
Then he said:
“You will be the leader of the women of Paradise. Does it not please you?” Upon hearing this glad tiding, I laughed.’”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Manaqib al-Ansar, Hadith: 3623, 3624)

From this narration, it is understood that there were two reasons for Fatimah’s (radi Allahu anha) laughter: one mentioned in the first narration, and the other mentioned in this narration.
And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary:
Just as he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had said, so it happened.
Six months after the passing of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), Fatimah (radi Allahu anha) passed away. From this hadith, the great virtue of Fatimah al-Zahra (radi Allahu anha) is established.

Hadith Commentary:

These are two hadiths. In the first hadith, the narrator from Hazrat Aisha (radi Allahu anha) is Hazrat Masruq, while in the second hadith, the narrator from her is Hazrat Urwah (rahimahullah). However, there is some difference between the two narrations. In the first narration, the reason for the crying of the Lady (Sayyidah) is stated to be her being the first to meet the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), whereas in the second narration, this is mentioned as the reason for her laughter.
In reality, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) secretly told Hazrat Fatimah (radi Allahu anha) three things. The first was about his passing away, which was the cause of her crying.
The second was about her being the leader (sayyidah) of the women in Paradise, which brought her joy and made her laugh.
The third was that among the family, she would be the first to pass away and would be the first to meet him.
This news was a cause of happiness and joy for one reason, as is mentioned in Urwah’s narration, and for another reason, it was a cause of grief, due to which she began to cry, as is mentioned in Masruq’s narration. In this way, the difference between the two narrations is resolved. Allamah Sindhi (rahimahullah) says that perhaps the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) gave the glad tidings to Sayyidah Fatimah (radi Allahu anha) twice:
Once, he combined the news of death with the glad tidings, which made her overcome by weeping, and the second time, he combined the glad tidings of leadership (sayyidah) with it, so both glad tidings became a cause for her laughter. In this way, both narrations can be reconciled.
(Haashiyah Sindhi: 2/284)

In short, two miracles are mentioned in these two narrations:
One is that Hazrat Fatimah (radi Allahu anha) would remain alive after him.
Accordingly, she lived for six months after him. The second miracle is that among the family, she would be the first to meet the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
Both matters were fulfilled word for word, which are a tremendous proof of his Prophethood.

Hadith Commentary:
Just as the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had said, so it happened: approximately six months after his passing, Fatimah al-Zahra (radi Allahu anha) passed away. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had given this news through divine revelation, because he was not ‘Alim al-Ghayb’ (Knower of the Unseen). Yes, whatever was made known to him by Allah the Exalted, he would convey, and then it would come to pass word for word.

‘Alim al-Ghayb’ is one who, of his own accord and without anyone informing him, can present news of the unseen. This knowledge of the unseen (ilm al-ghayb) is possessed only by Allah the Exalted, and no prophet or saint is a knower of the unseen.

In the Noble Qur’an, Allah the Exalted has made His Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) announce with his own tongue that: say, I am not a knower of the unseen.

If he had been a knower of the unseen, then the great calamity of the Battle of Uhud would not have occurred.

Hadith Commentary:
In these ahadith, Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has established the second part of the chapter heading: that loving the relatives of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is a requirement of faith. At the forefront of these relatives is Sayyidah Fatimah radi Allahu anha. To anger her without reason is, in effect, to anger the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam; therefore, utmost effort should be made to keep her pleased. Then, as a prophecy, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: Among my family, Sayyidah Fatimah radi Allahu anha will be the first to meet me. Accordingly, this is exactly what happened: six months after the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam passed away, Sayyidah Fatimah radi Allahu anha also passed away. In this way, the prophecy of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was fulfilled word for word.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues:
Hazrat Urwah, the nephew of Hazrat Aisha radi Allahu anha, narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam whispered to Hazrat Fatimah radi Allahu anha the sorrowful news of his own death, upon which she became restless and began to weep. Then, he again whispered to her this sorrowful news, that soon after him she would also pass away and join him. Thus, the news of meeting him overcame the news of death, and she laughed.

However, in contrast, in a narration from Hazrat Masruq, it is mentioned that the first time he whispered, he informed her of his own death and said, "Fear Allah and be patient, for I am your best predecessor, who is going ahead to welcome you." So, due to the shock of his death, she wept. Then, when he whispered again, he gave her the glad tidings of being the leader of the women of the Ummah and told her to be pleased with this, so she laughed. And in another narration, it is stated that the first time, along with the news of his own death, he also gave the news of Hazrat Fatimah's death.

The news of his own death could be a cause for both laughter and weeping: weeping due to the aspect of death, and happiness and joy due to the prospect of meeting him. Therefore, when, along with the news of his own death, the news of her own death was also given, both states of weeping and laughter were produced. When the joy and happiness of meeting him overcame the weeping, then the restlessness was removed, and there was no need for a second whisper. Therefore, the correct view seems to be that in the second whisper, along with the news of Hazrat Fatimah's death, she was also given the glad tidings of leadership, which brought her happiness and caused her to laugh.
