´It was narrated that ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr said:` “A man died in Al- Madinah, and he was one of those who were born in Al-Madinah. The Prophet (ﷺ) offered the funeral prayer for him and said: “Would that he had died somewhere other than his birthplace.” A man among the people said: “Why, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “If a man dies somewhere other than his birthplace, a space will be measured for him in Paradise (as big as the distance) from the place where he was born to the place where he died.”

Benefit:
This is Allah’s favor for that believer
who dies away from his homeland.
And this is purely His grace,
in which the servant’s own effort or intention has no part.
Due to his righteous deeds, he may receive many other places in Paradise as well.
But this is a special favor.
And Allah knows best.

1833. Commentary: This is a general matter. As for passing away in Madinah Munawwarah, then this is a very great felicity, which far surpasses the aforementioned virtue. The intent of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is not that this person dies outside of Madinah Munawwarah, but rather his meaning is that if only this person had not been born in Madinah; that he had been born elsewhere, migrated here, and then passed away in Madinah Munawwarah—because the virtue of dying in Madinah is established in the ahadith. See: (Sunan Ibn Majah, Al-Manasik, Hadith: 3112, and Musnad Ahmad: 2/74). And this is a great felicity for the believer. It should be remembered that for the attainment of every felicity, correct faith is a condition; otherwise, everything is futile.
