Brief Explanation
1؎: In the era of ignorance (Jahiliyyah), it was customary that when someone died, his relatives and close ones would recite elegies (marsiya), that is, poetic compositions in which his virtues were mentioned and expressions of grief and sorrow were made. In Islam, this was prohibited, but the ignorant did not refrain from it; even now, elegies are recited, narrated, and listened to «إنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون».
